Contests

Cosplay Grayscale Contest!

In the spirit of all things manga, MangaNEXT is giving our attendees the unique experience of a Grayscale Costume Contest this year as part of the MangaNEXT Hall Costume Contest.

The Grayscale Contest will be a separate division from normal entries and there will be one award granted to the best Grayscale Cosplay of the weekend.

All other Hall Costume Contest rules will apply for this part of the contest, (please see rules under Hall Cosplay). In addition all costumes are required to only incorporate black, white and gray into their construction. This means all accessories, wigs, shoes, etc. Also we STRONGLY request that entries bring a reference.

"We look forward to seeing what kind of work people bring to us this year!"

Create Our Male Mascot Contest! - WINNER ANNOUNCED

MangaNEXT wanted to have a male mascot, so we called upon the help of our attendees. We received many entries, but alas, there can only be one winner.  We are pleased to annouce that Jean Hair/ Ifurita with her entry of Kouji has won! See her answers to our questions, along with the answers of the two runner-ups, below. We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to submit an entry.

Winner - Jean Hair/ Ifurita

Contest Questions:
1. What is his name?
Kouji
2. A short reason for the name you have chosen:
I like that name ^ ^ Kouji’s nickname is Migi-kun though, because he’ll be on the right side of the page.
3. What is his relationship to our female mascot, Motoko? (Is he her brother, a friend, her boyfriend, a foe, etc)
Kouji is Makoto's cousin, an art student who specializes in coloring.
4. What kind of personality does he have? (Is he outgoing, shy, sarcastic, etc)
Kouji's always ready to help a friend, especially if that friend will then pose for him! He is never without his art supplies, his sketch book, colored pens and markers. When Kouji sees something, or someone that he wants to draw he just sits right down and gets to it.
5. What does he do for fun?
Kouji would say that drawing is fun! But he also likes hanging out with his friends, video games and of coarse reading manga. Makoto asked him to come to the MangaNext con this year and that sounds like fun too. Even better Makoto said she has an interesting project that she needs her cousin's help with. This year Makoto has decided to try her hand at making her own manga (what goes better with reading manga then making it?) and a favorite cousin with a set of copics is just what she needs! Kouji's all for the idea... of coarse he hasn't yet realized that sweet looking Makoto wants to draw a yaoi!!
6.Your description of him: (What does he look like, how does he dress and so forth)
Kouji has dark eyes and hair, which is always a bit messy because he spends so much time outside just taking in the sunshine and drawing what he sees. He wears jeans and a paint smeared Tshirt and always carries his art supplies in a messenger bag with the strap thrown over his chest. Kouji has perfect eye sight and a good eye for beauty too! He gets stuck running track a lot at school and so is lean, but lightly muscled.

Runner up - Arielle Rodriquez

Contest Questions:
1. What is his name?
Kent
2. A short reason for the name you have chosen:
Assuming that Motoko is from Japan, Kent is a foreigner who moved to Japan when he was very young. His father is in the army and was assigned to a base in Japan, which is why Kent and his family moved there. I named him  Kent because it is a non-japanese name and emphasizes that he is a foreigner.
3. What is his relationship to our female mascot, Motoko? (Is he her brother, a friend, her boyfriend, a foe, etc)
Once Kent started school, he was very shy since he was different from everyone else, and all the other kids didn’t like him because he was a foreign-looking boy. Except, Motoko. She was the only one brave enough and kind enough to lend out her hand and be a friend to Kent. They are still best friends to this day, and he considers Motoko like a little sister. :]
4. What kind of personality does he have? (Is he outgoing, shy, sarcastic, etc)
Kent is mostly shy around people, especially those he doesn’t know, but with Motoko he can be quite outgoing!
5. What does he do for fun?
Kouji would say that drawing is fun! But he also likes hanging out with his friends,
For fun, Kent likes to play video games, draw, watch anime, and read manga, of course. :D Kent is also in a band called “The GetBackers”, named after the manga itself, where he plays bass.
6.Your description of him: (What does he look like, how does he dress and so forth)
Kent has very long, layered hair. He is not very good at caring for it, so it tends to be messy sometimes! His natural hair color is blonde, but he likes to dye black tips at the ends. He wears punk clothes and listens to visual kei music. His favorite bands are the GazzetE, D’espairs Ray, and Phantasmagoria. His basic clothing color palette is black, white, and red. I would say his age could be about from 17-19, but depending on how old Motoko is supposed to be, about a little less than a year older. His height is about 6’3”. He has a muscle-toned build, but nothing too muscular.

2nd Runner up - Rachel Strasser

Contest Questions:
1. What is his name?
Mikoto
2. A short reason for the name you have chosen:
I think it's cuter to have similar mascots rather than totally different ones, isn't it? That would be the reasoning behind his entire design, not just his name.
3. What is his relationship to our female mascot, Motoko?
They're cousins - their mothers are sisters. While they don't live very close to each other, they have tried to keep in touch, and share an interest in reading.
4. What kind of personality does he have?
Because he's always got his face in a manga or scribbling down ideas for his 50,000-word epic fanfiction, he seems to be quiet and aloof at first glance. But when you talk to him, he's actually very friendly, and especially loves to talk about his favorite series. He's not the kind to go up and sing karaoke, but he's still fun to hang out with.
5. What does he do for fun?
If he's not glued to a manga or his fanfiction, he's probably doing something else nerdy: helping his local anime club write their visual novel, cleaning up manga pages for a scanlation group, or just dusting off his manga. He also likes bowling.
6.Your description of him:
Short dark brown hair just past his ears, dark blue eyes. A plaid sleeveless sweater (tan base, white + green stripes) with a long-sleeved white dress shirt underneath it. Dark green dress pants and dark brown shoes. He's a little taller than Motoko.
